WAY more functional, but it looks like some people are slow to make the move.

I really like this new forum. I can actually understand what is going on and I really like posting on it.

One minor thing with this forum... I don't know who the users are, because their usernames are not their real names. Perhaps we could have people put their real names in the signatures? I like to know who I'm talking to...

Stephen, I completely, wholeheartedly, brutally disagree with you. Identification on this forum ought to be a choice, not a requirement.

I know it's a tiny feature, but I like how we can have the image of the book for the novel/story discussion board. Very Happy

I think for grading's sake, people should be identifiable. Sure we would like to be anonymous posters, but how would TheDirector know who was actively posting?

A couple of times I have posted short responses to topics, but later the responses seem to have disappeared. Has anyone else experienced this?

I am wondering if the disappearing post problem has something to do with Firefox. Several times when I have changed pages, Firefox will load for a while and then say "Done" but display a blank screen. I haven't expereinced this with IE, so I am going to switch to IE for this board for a while to see if that helps.

Kevin, do you use Firefox?

It seems that IE screws up as well. So it must be the Forumotion software or server.

ahh...but chat rooms require that enough people are on at the same time to chat with, no?

And I would be considered one of those laggers...can't keep up with you guys! But if I DID, then this forum would be so much more awesome haha.

OHHHH too bad we didn't think of this sooner...there should be a designated time slot for all of us to go online! It'll be like ...half in-person/half online class...since we have to do this forum anyway. It'll be a quick discussion though, because I'd rather not sit in front of my laptop for too long...

You could still designate some summer chat times. Wherever you were in the world you could get together and chat about science fiction. You could chose a book to read and have an online book club.

That's not a bad idea.

A couple summers ago, my friends and I started a book club...I mean, it died instantly when school started, but the idea was good!

I also suggest that you all invite your friends in at this point. Some folks in the class will drift away, but others might replace them and help form a viable community. Tiffany is still admin for the board. After Wednesday, I will withdraw, but I will probably look in from time to time, and you can still send me a pm with a question.

In the spirit of opening this up to new members, I have unbanned Outside Observer, who is a friend of Vicente's.

Summer book club definitely sounds feasible. I would hate to see it die away when Fall Quarter starts, though. Well, unless this class is being taught again in the fall.

Hey David. To get an avatar, you would click the profile link on top (next to groups and before messages) and then you should see your registration info. Near the top right of the page there should be options that say: preferences, signature, avatar...etc. Click on avatar and you can choose from pictures available or upload your own. That's it!

The book club and chat ideas sound cool. I kinda guessed the chat feature wouldn't be used much since we only had around 20 members, but I just put it there for fun. If anyone is interested in becoming an admin/moderator, PM me and I'll let you know.

So I suppose this is the end then. No more responses on the post that only got a few posts to begin with. Everyone has their credit and only a few will continue to use this through the summer. Then by the beginning of next fall, no one will post at all. I certainly hope, this site will be used by someone. It has served us well and deserves a better fate than to be ignored by the masses of "Metaversian" souls perusing the internet for facebook profiles and wiki info.

Maybe the next generation of SF thinkers will stumble upon our site and wonder about the questions we asked. Or maybe they will just flame us terribly and disregard all the questions we asked, all the thoughts we had. But who knows. Maybe we will be remembered as the honors students who asked the inevitable question of malcontent humanity; "What if...?"

In the words of a wise man, "Let the word go forth, from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans--born in this country, tempered by war, disciplined by the hard and bitter peace, proud of our heritage--and unwilling to witness or permitt the slow undoing of those human rights to which this Nation has always been committed..."

To those that follow, enjoy the work that we have laid down. To those that remain, never stop asking questions, for we are the life blood of this Nation, and we have a duty to ask "Why?"

Well, people are either kind of busy or taking a little break. Don't be too impatient.

I am sorry I haven't gotten the grades up yet. I had to pack my office, proofread some page proofs, go to Sacramento, prepare a couple of workshops, and various other things. This weekend I will finish reading everything and post the scores to Blackboard.

I wasn't being impatient. I was lamenting about the inevitable.

Don't worry about the grades. You have been a busy man. It really was a great quarter. I especially enjoyed writing the story and reading the totally amazing books. I think my favorite books are The Stars My Destination/Tiger! Tiger! and Snow Crash. Both are extremely well written and a lot of fun to read.

Thanks again for everything you have done.
